Why Buy a Diesel Vehicle

Since gas prices are so high it is smart economically to get a vehicle that gets better gas mileage. Many people are now looking into buying new diesel cars because of the many advantages over a gas-powered vehicle. With a vehicle with a diesel engine you can have better gas mileage, while still getting great performance. Diesel engines can give better gas mileage, perform better, and can be more reliable than gasoline powered engines.

Diesel Engines Are More Fuel Efficient

It is a fact that in the same size of a gas and diesel engine that the diesel engine burns less fuel. The gas engine requires more fuel to do the exact same amount of work. Diesel engines use direct fuel injection systems, which are more efficient than gas engine manifold systems. This is one of the reasons that diesel vehicles give better overall fuel economy.  Gasoline powered engines also burn around 3 times as much fuel when they are idling than their diesel engine counterparts. Even though it is the case that diesel fuel is about the same price or may be a little more expensive you will still save money, as you will not use as much fuel if your vehicle has a diesel engine. Nowadays there are many small vehicles that have diesel engines. For example, there are now several gm diesel cars that are of the smaller variety. When looking for new diesel cars you can now find them in the small, midrange, and large varieties. Better Engine Performance

Many times diesel engines offer better performance than gasoline engines. Even though it is the case that gas-powered vehicles are faster in acceleration, as they rev faster, this has been changing with the new diesel cars that have been produced. For example, new diesel trucks now can accelerate faster than gas-powered trucks since their power ratings have been significantly increased, which allows them to overcome the fact that they are slower revving vehicles. Diesel engines have much more low-end torque than gas engines do. This means that they can pull heavier loads and keep their speed steady on steeper hills much easier then gas engines can. This is especially the case in diesel engine vehicles that have manual transmissions that stay in high gear on hills, where with a gas powered vehicle, you would have to downshift.

Improvement in Diesel Engines

In the past people were put off, as there were several aspects of diesel engines that were not attractive. Over the years improvements in technology have cut down these unattractive aspects. Diesel engines used to have exhaust that smelled bad, produced black smoke, and produced harmful emissions. As computer controlled systems are being used more these days in new diesel cars these things are now a thing of the past. A couple of examples of improved technology are vastly improved superchargers and pilot ignition systems that have eliminated black smoke with diesel engine powered vehicles.

The smell of the exhaust has also been greatly reduced, as smoke in the engine has been eliminated. New fuel blends have helped to reduce emissions that are harmful and contribute to smog. Nowadays diesel engines have lower emissions than gas powered engines. The engines for diesel vehicles ignite the fuel by compressing it to a high pressure and temperature that causes it to ignite, rather than a gas powered engine, which uses spark plugs for fuel ignition. In the past diesel cars were hard to start in cold weather, but that has also changed in the past few years, as computer controls that the diesel engines use.

Comparing Prices

Even though new diesel cars are more expensive to buy than gas powered cars you have to look at the long term benefits for owning a diesel car. Over the life of the car you will save a significant amount of money, as stated before, because diesel engines burn less fuel than gas powered cars. Diesel engines are also more durable, so there are not as many engine problems with a new diesel car. Diesel engines are specifically built in order to withstand both pressure and compression rations. The engine will be composed of very thick block cylinder heads, valves, and crankshaft, pistons, all of which will be more durable than on a gas powered vehicle.

While it may be the case that with a new diesel car you will spend more money on short-term maintenance because of larger oil capacity, more long-term maintenance issues, such s tune-ups, are not needed because diesel engines do not have a spark ignition system.  You will save money in the long run if you buy a new diesel car because, all in all, the diesel engine will run around 3 times as many miles as gas powered engines before they need to be rebuilt. You can look at a list of new diesel cars sold in the US and find out how much they cost compared to their gas powered counterparts.  There are now many car manufactures that are making new diesel cars, such as new GM diesel cars, so do some research, as in the short run a new diesel car will cost more money, but in the long run you will save money.
